Vijay Sethupathi Opens Up About Super Deluxe Oscars Snub: “It’s Politics”

Renowned actor Vijay Sethupathi recently discussed the disappointment of his critically acclaimed 2019 film, “Super Deluxe,” not being selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars. Speaking at an event, the actor revealed that the decision to send Ranveer Singh’s “Gully Boy” instead of “Super Deluxe” was a result of political factors.

Sethupathi portrayed a transgender character named Shilpa in “Super Deluxe,” a film directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. Despite the film’s success and accolades, it was overlooked in favor of “Gully Boy” for the prestigious Oscars nomination.

Expressing his feelings on the matter, Sethupathi stated, “It was heartbreaking for me and the team of Super Deluxe. I was shattered, but it’s politics. We know that something happened. It’s not because I was in that film. Even if I were not in that film, I would’ve wanted that film to go there. Something happened in between, and I don’t want to talk about that. It’s unnecessary.”

“Super Deluxe” featured a stellar cast, including Fahadh Faasil, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Ramya Krishnan, Mysskin, and Mirnalini Ravi. Vijay’s segment, titled “Shilpa’s Story,” earned him the National Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Vijay Sethupathi is currently gearing up for the release of “Merry Christmas,” where he stars alongside Katrina Kaif. Directed by Sriram Raghavan, the film is set to hit screens on January 12, coinciding with the Pongal festival. The movie, shot simultaneously in Tamil and Hindi, has generated buzz with intriguing trailers. The music for “Merry Christmas” is composed by Pritam and Daniel B George, promising a unique cinematic experience for the audience.
