Renowned Tamil composer Ilaiyaraaja has taken legal action against the producers of the Malayalam film “Manjummel Boys” for the unauthorised use of his song “Kanmani Anbodu Kaadhalan” from the 1991 film “Guna”. The notice demands either the removal of the song from the film or obtaining proper permissions and paying royalties.
Ilaiyaraaja’s counsel asserts that recognizing him in the title cards does not substitute for obtaining proper authorization. The notice states that the song was used without his consent, leading to commercial exploitation without due compensation.
The legal notice outlines two options for the “Manjummel Boys” producers: secure Ilaiyaraaja’s permission and pay royalties, or remove the song from the film. Failure to comply will result in civil and criminal proceedings against producers Soubhin Shahir, Babu Shahir, and Shawn Antony.
“Manjummel Boys”, released in February 2024, is a survival drama about 11 friends from Kerala who face challenges during a trip to Kodaikanal. The film’s plot and the legal controversy highlight the importance of respecting intellectual property rights in the film industry.
